Geopolitical tensions threaten Dominican Republic economy

Political analyst Juan González has warned that escalating international conflicts and trade tensions pose significant threats to the economy of the Dominican Republic. He noted that the intensification of wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, combined with the ongoing trade war between the United States and China, could drive up international prices for oil, food, edible fats, and other imported services.

Regarding the Russia-Ukraine war, González described the situation as a broader geopolitical rivalry between Moscow and the European Union, highlighting Germany and the United Kingdom as primary European supporters of Ukraine. He also addressed shifts in U.S. policy under Donald Trump, noting a move toward requiring European nations to fund weaponry for Kyiv rather than relying on free U.S. supplies.

González suggested that the Trump administration's approach may be an attempt to distance Russia from China. He further questioned the consistency of U.S. diplomatic requests, noting that while Ukraine has been asked to avoid attacking Russian oil installations to stabilize global prices, similar demands have not been made of Russia regarding its strikes on civilian targets.
