Geopolitics shifts as climate change and European rearmament reshape strategic priorities

The shifting landscape of global geopolitics is being driven by both environmental changes and a significant trend toward European rearmament. Climate change is altering the strategic value of geography, particularly in the Arctic, where melting ice is opening new maritime routes and providing access to previously unreachable energy and mineral resources.

Simultaneously, European nations are moving away from the concept of perpetual peace toward increased military spending. Aggregate military expenditure in the European Union is projected to exceed 400 billion euros. Italy is a major participant in this trend, committing over 130 billion euros in multi-year investments. Key projects include the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) for sixth-generation fighter jets alongside the United Kingdom and Japan, as well as industrial alliances with Rheinmetall to modernize armored vehicle fleets, including Leopard 2A8 tanks and Lynx infantry fighting vehicles. Additional investments are directed toward naval modernization, including DDX destroyers, FREMM EVO frigates, and stealth submarines.
