Geoprocessing and AI tools enhance environmental management and journalism

Geoprocessing and spatial analysis technologies are increasingly becoming strategic tools for environmental management and journalism. In environmental contexts, tools such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), GPS, remote sensing, and drones allow for the precise monitoring of deforestation, pollution, and water scarcity. Drones, in particular, provide high-resolution imagery that complements satellite data, aiding in inspection, environmental forensics, and land-use licensing.

In the media sector, InfoAmazonia has launched a new version of JEO, an open-source geojournalism plugin integrated with WordPress. Supported by the Google News Initiative, this tool uses artificial intelligence to help newsrooms transform location data into editorial content. It enables the creation of interactive maps and features such as ‘Stories Near Me,’ which suggests content based on the reader's geographic proximity, and intelligent recommendations that combine spatial and thematic similarity.
