Geordin Hill-Lewis warns of coalition risks in Cape Town elections

Geordin Hill-Lewis, the Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidate for Cape Town, has warned that the fragmentation of votes among smaller parties could force a coalition government following the local elections on 4 November.

Speaking at a campaign event in Blouberg, Hill-Lewis noted that internal polling places the DA’s support between 51% and 52%, a margin he described as “too close for comfort.” He cautioned that if opposition parties each capture small percentages of the vote, it could lead to “coalition chaos” and allow parties such as the African National Congress (ANC) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to gain influence in the metro.

Hill-Lewis urged voters against complacency, stating that no majority is safe if supporters do not turn out. He highlighted the party’s recent record, including the addition of 418,000 jobs and increased infrastructure investment, while outlining future goals such as establishing a Metro Police Detective Unit and reducing business red tape.
