George Afriyie disputes record GH¢1m Ghana Premier League club funding claim
Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie has challenged claims that the proposed GH¢1 million payment to each Ghana Premier League club is the highest financial support ever provided to teams in the competition.
Afriyie noted that during a previous sponsorship era with telecommunications company Glo, clubs received $120,000 in sponsorship plus $40,000 from television rights, totaling $160,000 per club. He argued that the current GH¢1 million package, which he estimated at approximately $90,000, does not surpass those historical commercial figures.
GFA President Kurt Okraku recently announced that each of the 18 Premier League clubs would receive the GH¢1 million ahead of the 2026/27 season, linked to broadcasting and commercialization arrangements with Adesa Productions Limited. Afriyie has also raised questions regarding the transparency and specific source of these funds.
