George Chuvalo, Canadian boxing legend, dies at 89

Canadian boxing legend George Chuvalo has died at the age of 89, passing away on his birthday in Toronto. A five-time Canadian heavyweight champion, Chuvalo was widely celebrated for his incredible durability, famously never being knocked down during his 93 professional bouts.

His career was highlighted by two historic matches against Muhammad Ali in 1966 and 1972. Despite losing both by decision, Chuvalo earned immense respect for his ability to stand toe-to-toe with Ali, who later described him as the toughest fighter he ever faced. Throughout his career, he also competed against other heavyweight greats including Joe Frazier and George Foreman.

Chuvalo finished his professional career with a record of 73 wins (64 by knockout), 18 losses, and two draws. Beyond his athletic achievements, he was known for his resilience in the face of significant personal tragedies involving the loss of his wife and three sons. Ontario Premier Doug Ford and the World Boxing Council have both issued tributes to the man described as a ‘Canadian icon’ and ‘Canada’s greatest warrior’.
