George Chuvalo dies at 89 after career as heavyweight contender

Canadian heavyweight boxer George Chuvalo has died at the age of 89 on his birthday, following a long battle with dementia.

Over a 22-year professional career, Chuvalo compiled a record of 93 fights. He was noted for his extraordinary durability, having never been knocked down despite facing legendary opponents such as Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, and Floyd Patterson. He twice challenged for world titles, losing decisions to Ernie Terrell in 1965 and Ali in 1966. His 1965 bout with Patterson was recognized as the Ring Magazine Fight of the Year.

Beyond his athletic achievements, Chuvalo was known for his resilience following significant personal tragedies, including the loss of two sons to heroin addiction and the suicides of his wife and a third child. He became a prominent anti-drug advocate and lent his name to a Toronto community center serving at-risk and LGBTQ youth.
