George Clarke serves as postmaster at Port Lockroy in Antarctica

George Clarke, an artist from Bristol, has begun his third deployment to Antarctica to serve as the postmaster at Port Lockroy, the world’s most southerly post office. Working from late October through March during the southern hemisphere summer, Clarke manages the processing of postcards and letters for the small station.

Because the location lacks traditional postal infrastructure, Clarke coordinates with passing ships via radio or email to transport sorted and weighed mail north toward the Falkland Islands for global distribution.

In addition to postal duties, Clarke serves as the deputy base commander. His responsibilities include site maintenance, cleaning, and assisting the British Antarctic Survey with wildlife observations. The station, a former British scientific research facility, is managed by the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust and is home to a colony of approximately 1,000 gentoo penguins.
