George Clooney honors sister and critiques politics at Venice Film Festival

At the Venice Film Festival, actor and director George Clooney received the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement. During his appearance, he shared personal reflections on the passing of his older sister, Adelia, who died last December at age 65 following a battle with cancer.

Clooney spoke about the profound impact of her death and the brevity of life, noting that he held her hand as she passed. He remembered her as his ‘heroine’ and reflected on their childhood bond.

In addition to personal reflections, Clooney addressed the current political climate in the United States. He used the term ‘kakistocracy’—a government run by the least qualified citizens—to describe the present state of affairs. He expressed hope that the upcoming elections would serve as a system of checks and balances, suggesting a return to normalcy by 2028. Clooney also noted his long-standing support for Democratic Party fundraising initiatives since 1988, while clarifying that he has no intention of running for political office himself.
