Tooro Kingdom succession dispute erupts following death of King Oyo

A succession dispute has erupted in Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who passed away at age 34 while undergoing cancer treatment in the United States.

A 21-member succession committee from the Babiito royal clan has named Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a Uganda Broadcasting Corporation news anchor, as the next Omukama. However, this decision has been met with intense opposition from the late king’s immediate family.

Princess Ruth Komuntale and Queen Mother Best Kemigisa have rejected the appointment, citing a 2022 will left by King Oyo. The document reportedly names the late king’s biological son as his primary heir, with Prince Komwiswa Yoweri and Prince Nyaika Solomon listed as secondary successors.

The dispute has escalated into a security concern, with the Queen Mother alleging that royal guards were removed from the palace and replaced by soldiers, placing the family under what she described as house arrest. Tooro Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire has called for calm, suggesting the succession matter be addressed after the king’s scheduled burial.
