George Enescu International Festival introduces new competition format
Romania is hosting several significant cultural events, headlined by the George Enescu International Festival. The 2026 edition features a major innovation in its instrumental semifinals for cello, violin, and piano: a ‘play and conduct’ format. In this format, semifinalists will perform as soloists while simultaneously providing artistic leadership to the Radio Chamber Orchestra without a conductor.
Radio România Muzical will provide live broadcasts of the festival, including the opening concert at the Romanian Athenaeum and various symphonic concerts and finals. Looking further ahead, organizers have announced that the 28th edition of the festival is scheduled for August 27 to September 26, 2027, with an estimated budget of approximately 73.9 million lei.
Other regional cultural activities include the Star Vivere Music Revolution festival for children and adolescents in Oradea, the Banat Festival in Eibenthal featuring Czech independent music, and various art exhibitions, such as Emil Lazăr’s ‘Cotidian’ in Piatra Neamț and George Stanciu’s ‘Fragmentar’ in Buzău.
