George Enescu historical collaboration debate

A historical debate has emerged regarding whether the renowned composer George Enescu collaborated with the Romanian communist regime. The controversy stems from comments made by historian Adrian Cioroianu, who suggested that Enescu’s departure from the country occurred with the regime's consent and that he maintained his Romanian citizenship passport until his death in 1955.

In response, Victor Eskenasy has challenged these assertions, arguing that the historian’s claims unfairly cast anathema upon a democratic and upright intellectual. Eskenasy points out that Enescu had already left Romania for a tour in the United States and Canada prior to the 1946 elections organized by the Romanian Communist Party. Furthermore, Eskenasy notes that Enescu appeared to defy the regime in 1948 by boycotting a concert at Carnegie Hall that was being used for political propaganda.
