George Enescu legacy celebrated through anniversary tributes and international competition

Romania is celebrating the legacy of composer George Enescu through both commemorative events and the launch of a major international music competition.

In Tescani, actor Marcel Iureș participated in a cultural event at the Rosetti-Tescanu – George Enescu Memorial House to mark the 145th anniversary of the composer’s birth. The event featured a dramatic reading of ‘Memories of George Enescu’ accompanied by musical performances by pianist and cimbalom player Cătălin Răducanu. Iureș praised Enescu as a model of talent and discipline for future generations.

Simultaneously, the 20th edition of the George Enescu International Competition has commenced in Bucharest. This anniversary edition, themed ‘In Pursuit of Excellence,’ has seen record participation with 819 applications from 58 countries. Following a pre-selection process, 150 musicians will compete in violin, cello, and piano categories. The competition has expanded its scope to include masterclasses, career mentoring, and workshops, with total prize values exceeding €150,000.
