Greece: EU mission to investigate Tempi railway safety and UN Security Council Presidency

Greece is preparing for two major diplomatic and domestic developments. A delegation from the European Parliament's Committee on Petitions, led by Vice-Chair Dolors Montserrat, will conduct a three-day investigative mission from September 21 to 23. The mission will visit Larissa and Athens to evaluate railway safety measures, EU law implementation, and the progress of EU-funded infrastructure projects following the 2023 Tempi train accident.

Separately, Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis addressed significant geopolitical shifts in recent interviews. He noted a retreat of international law and a rise in global armed conflicts. Ahead of Greece assuming the Presidency of the UN Security Council in October, Gerapetritis emphasized Athens' role as a bridge between different global factions. Regarding bilateral relations, he stated that the delimitation of the continental shelf and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is the only issue between Greece and Turkey that can be referred to international jurisdiction, while maintaining that dialogue with Ankara must continue.
