George Gerapetritis warns of shifting geopolitical era in Toronto speech

Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis addressed the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto, describing the current era as one of profound geopolitical restructuring. He characterized the last three years as an ‘absolute disaster’ from a geopolitical perspective, noting that power is increasingly superseding international law and multilateralism.

Gerapetritis highlighted an ‘explosive mixture’ of global challenges, including the rise in active armed conflicts—noting there are now more than 60 active conflicts, the highest number since World War II—alongside energy and food insecurity. He specifically cited tensions in the Red Sea, the Gulf, and the impact of the war in Ukraine on grain export corridors.

The Minister also warned of future conflicts arising from water scarcity and expressed concern regarding the impact of Artificial Intelligence on public discourse and political campaigns. He noted that the speed of social media often outpaces the need for accuracy and expressed skepticism regarding the United Nations Security Council's ability to make substantive decisions due to its current structure and lack of consensus among members.
