George Kittle returns to 49ers after Achilles injury recovery

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle has returned to professional competition following a torn Achilles tendon suffered on January 11, 2026, during an NFC Wild Card game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Kittle completed his recovery in 243 days, returning to the lineup on September 10 against the Los Angeles Rams, a timeline notably faster than the NFL average of approximately 10 months.

Kittle’s rehabilitation involved surgery on January 14 and a progressive loading process. After an initial controlled performance of 12 yards in his debut, his production has increased significantly. Through three games, he has recorded 12 receptions for 174 yards and three touchdowns.

Kittle attributed his return to a “super positive mindset” and a disciplined approach to rehabilitation. His physical therapist, Heather Milligan, emphasized that the recovery process required strict adherence to strength protocols without taking shortcuts.
