George Lucas and the exclusion of Mara Jade from Star Wars

George Lucas reportedly excluded the character Mara Jade from the Star Wars films due to his skepticism regarding the Expanded Universe. Originally introduced in Timothy Zahn’s 1991 novel ‘Heir to the Empire’, Mara Jade transitioned from the Emperor’s assassin to a Jedi and the wife of Luke Skywalker in various books, comics, and video games.

In a 2008 interview, Lucas expressed that many stories following the events of Episode IV did not align with his original vision, viewing the Expanded Universe as interpretations rather than his own work.
