George Lucas discusses Star Wars revisions and unmade sequels

George Lucas has addressed long-standing debates regarding his decision to revise the original Star Wars trilogy. He explained that the films were often released before he felt they were truly finished due to strict production deadlines. By revisiting the films for the Special Editions, he sought to execute his complete creative vision.

Lucas also revealed that he had planned to create three additional Star Wars films before deciding to retire and focus on the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. This decision followed his $4 billion sale of the franchise to Disney in 2012.

Looking toward the future of the franchise, Lucasfilm is expanding its storytelling. A new comic book crossover titled ‘Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles’ is scheduled for January 2027 to celebrate the franchise's 50th anniversary. Additionally, a new film trilogy is in development, with director Jon Watts reportedly attached to the first installment.
