George Lucas reveals plans for three more Star Wars films were scrapped for museum

George Lucas has revealed that he had plans to direct three additional Star Wars films before deciding to retire from filmmaking. The 82-year-old creator explained that his decision was driven by a desire to focus his remaining time on the creation of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles.

During an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Lucas noted that he felt he was running out of time to realize the museum project. The institution, which cost approximately $1.5 billion, features 35 galleries and a collection of 1,200 pieces, including original Star Wars costumes and vehicles. His wife and business partner, Mellody Hobson, highlighted his intense involvement in every detail of the museum's development.

Lucas also addressed his history of revising the original Star Wars trilogy. He defended these changes, stating that he viewed them as a way to ‘finish’ the films, which he felt were often rushed into theaters due to strict deadlines. He noted that while some fans were dissatisfied with these alterations, he felt it was a necessary part of his creative process.
