Kenya: Political standoff intensifies between Governor Natembeya and President Ruto

A political standoff is escalating between Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and President William Ruto. The conflict involves disputes over county-funded projects, including the Masinde Muliro Market and new county assembly offices. Natembeya has threatened legal action to prevent the President from inaugurating the market, asserting it was built entirely with county funds and accusing the national government of bullying and overreach.

The tension has manifested in the National Police Service withdrawing Natembeya’s official security detail for a second time, an action the Governor condemned as arbitrary intimidation. This follows public accusations by President Ruto that Natembeya’s ‘Tawe Movement’ is obstructing national development initiatives. In response to recent political jabs from the President, Natembeya has utilized social media to mock the administration.

Separately, the Court of Appeal has cleared the way for the implementation of a KSh328 billion health cooperation framework between Kenya and the United States. The court lifted previous orders blocking the deal, citing the public interest and the need to protect essential medical treatments for over 1.4 million Kenyans, particularly those managing HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria.
