Greece announces tax relief for farmers and pension boosts

The Greek government has announced several significant economic measures. A new tax reform will implement a 0% tax rate for primary farmers whose annual income does not exceed 20,000 euros, effective from the 2026 tax year. This measure aims to increase disposable income and attract new workers to the agricultural sector.

Additionally, a permanent annual financial boost of 400 euros has been announced for approximately 2.2 million pensioners. Starting in November 2026, this supplement will be available to all pensioners over the age of 65, as well as those over 60 receiving only a widow's pension. The reform removes previous income and asset thresholds, expanding the pool of eligible recipients.

In the political sphere, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis's visit to Kastellorizo has sparked a sharp confrontation with former Prime Minister George Papandreou. Mitsotakis used the visit to symbolize Greece's transition from the era of economic memorandums to a period of growth. Papandreou responded by criticizing the current administration, arguing that the economic crisis of 2010 was the responsibility of the New Democracy party and that the current government is repeating past mistakes regarding social justice and transparency.
