George R. R. Martin continues to face delays in completing his epic fantasy saga, 'A Song of Ice and Fire'. Despite the conclusion of the HBO television adaptation, 'Game of Thrones', the novelist remains stuck on the penultimate volume, 'The Winds of Winter'. His last major installment, 'A Dance with Dragons', was released in 2011.

This phenomenon of successful authors struggling to finish ambitious long-running series is not unique to Martin. Other notable examples include David Peace, who took 12 years to finish his Tokyo trilogy, and Sue Grafton, who died before completing her 'Alphabet Crime' series.
