George Russell crashes in Singapore Sprint, forcing Mercedes to use used parts
The inaugural Sprint race in Singapore was marked by weather delays and a significant crash involving George Russell. After taking the lead from Max Verstappen on the first lap of the wet race, Russell lost control at the final corner and hit the barriers.
Following the accident, Mercedes mechanics had to rebuild Russell’s car using second-hand parts because the team had exhausted its stock of new spares. Toto Wolff confirmed the car was assembled with components from previous race weekends, including the front wing, floor, and suspension. Russell noted a drop in performance during Grand Prix qualifying, stating the car did not feel the same despite using the same aerodynamic specification.
The event has also reignited debate regarding the Sprint format. Drivers such as Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc expressed concerns about the utility of Sprint races on street circuits where overtaking is difficult. Conversely, Emanuele Pirro, President of the FIA Single Seater Commission, defended the format, arguing that the increased racing weekend density is beneficial for fans.
