George Russell discusses respect and tension with Max Verstappen
Mercedes driver George Russell has expressed a growing respect for Max Verstappen, noting that his perception of the Dutchman has changed due to Verstappen’s mentality and dedication to motorsport. Russell highlighted Verstappen’s passion for racing outside of Formula 1, specifically his participation in GT racing, as a sign that he is motivated by more than just championships.
However, Russell also addressed recent tensions following a qualifying session in Italy. He claimed that Verstappen’s actions contributed to a chaotic session, alleging that Verstappen braked heavily entering the Parabolica corner to avoid being the lead car. Russell stated this disrupted his attempt to secure pole position, as he was unable to utilize the slipstream provided by teammate Kimi Antonelli.
