George Russell recalls physical struggles during 2020 Mercedes debut

George Russell has revealed the physical difficulties and lasting effects of his emergency Mercedes debut at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix. Called up to replace Lewis Hamilton after the latter tested positive for COVID-19, Russell faced immediate challenges fitting into the W11 cockpit, which had been designed for the smaller frames of Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.

Russell noted that his height and large feet made the experience particularly uncomfortable. To fit into the car, he had to wear size 43 shoes despite normally wearing size 45. He described himself as being “scrunched in” and “bent over” during the race. The driver also disclosed that he still carries physical scars on his hips from the ordeal of squeezing into the seat.

Despite these physical constraints and the short notice, Russell delivered an impressive performance, qualifying on the front row and leading the race early on. However, his debut was marred by a series of pit stop errors by the Mercedes team and a subsequent puncture, which ultimately impacted his final result.
