George Tatsios calls for closure of Kleidi migrant facility

George Tatsios has called for the permanent closure of the migrant facility located in Kleidi, following a resolution by the Municipal Council of Sinthi. Tatsios emphasized that the site holds significant historical importance, noting it was the location of the Kyriakidi Artillery unit during the German invasion in April 1941. He requested that the facility be closed similarly to the site at Thermopylae due to its symbolic and historical value.

Tatsios also raised concerns regarding the site's suitability, stating it is located in an environmentally and spatially inappropriate position within a stream, which poses safety risks.

During a meeting with Migration and Asylum Minister Thanos Plevris, the Minister stated that the government's central goal is to drastically limit and eventually eliminate illegal migration flows. Plevris reported that 6,000 illegal residents have been deported over the last twelve months and that migration flows have decreased by 37% due to stricter policies linking illegal entry and stay to detention and return.
