George Walter Griffith faces nine housebreaking charges in Mornington
George Walter Griffith, 22, appeared before the Mornington Court of Petty Session on nine charges of housebreaking. The court proceedings drew a large crowd interested in the evidence presented.
One witness, Mr. Harper-Brown, testified that his Beach Grove residence in Mornington was ransacked on August 8. The intruder broke a glass panel in the front door and stole a linen bag containing approximately 25 sovereigns and jewellery valued at £100. A loaded gun was also removed from a cupboard and found at the foot of the stairs. Griffith was found in possession of jewellery identified by the witness.
Other witnesses reported various instances of housebreaking in the Mornington area, including a residence on the Esplanade and a house in South Yarra, though some reports indicated that nothing of value was stolen during those specific incidents.
