Georges-Louis Bouchez opposes new taxes as Belgium targets €10bn budget cut by 2029
At the Flemish Community Day ceremony in Brussels, MR party leader Georges‑Louis Bouchez dismissed any proposal to add “another layer of taxes to the budget lasagna”. He said, “Une lasagne, c’est bien, mais elle ne doit pas être trop lourde à cause d’un excès de crème. Il ne faut pas ajouter de couche de taxes à la lasagne budgétaire.”
Bouchez argued that the federal budget should be cleaned up by reducing public spending rather than raising taxes, especially a wealth tax, which he said would ultimately burden ordinary taxpayers. His remarks came after the “kern” coalition agreed on a €10 billion fiscal consolidation plan to be achieved by 2029.
