Georges River Council moves to protect Glenlee via national park proposal

The Georges River Council has voted unanimously to propose that the National Parks and Wildlife Service incorporate the historic Glenlee property into the Georges River National Park. This community acquisition proposal follows a new development application for eight dwellings and a private cul-de-sac road, an estimated $23 million project, which has faced strong opposition from community groups including Friends of Glenlee, Oatley Flora and Fauna, and Georges River Trees.

In a related effort to manage local growth, Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg has encouraged residents to review the council’s Principal Certifier and Council Responsibilities Policy. The initiative aims to clarify roles as more developments are approved by private certifiers rather than through traditional council processes. While private certifiers handle day-to-day inspections and compliance, the council maintains enforcement powers to issue stop-work orders, fines, or legal action in cases involving immediate threats to safety, property, or the environment.
