Georgetown begins road shoulder improvement programme
The Guyana Public Works Ministry has awarded contracts to improve road shoulders across Georgetown. The programme involves clearing, excavating, and filling road verges with compacted crusher-run stone or other aggregates to create more durable surfaces.
These improvements aim to provide better parking areas to reduce traffic lane congestion and address poor roadside runoff. By reshaping shoulders to appropriate levels and slopes, the project intends to prevent rainwater from ponding and ensure efficient flow into roadside drains. The use of granular material is also expected to facilitate surface water filtration to replenish groundwater.
A key component of the initiative is the removal of roadside obstructions, such as derelict vehicles, unauthorized structures, and stockpiled building materials, which currently restrict access and occupy public space. The Ministry has urged residents and business owners to cooperate by removing items from road reserves to ensure the works can proceed efficiently.
