Georgetown Fire Claims Life of 65-Year-Old Man
A blaze erupted on Lamaha Street in the Newtown, Kitty area of Georgetown, Guyana, shortly after 21:00 on Thursday. The fire gutted three adjacent buildings, completely destroying two and partially damaging the third.
The victim, 65‑year‑old Vernal Duncan, who was recovering from a stroke, was found dead among the charred remains. Firefighters from the Campbellville and Eccles stations of the Guyana Fire Service responded, contained the flames, and conducted a thorough search that uncovered the missing occupant’s body. Senior Fire Officer Rovin Thomas praised the crews, saying they “did an excellent job.”
Neighbour Sylvia Grey recounted hearing her son smell smoke, attempting to douse the flames with water, and evacuating with her seven‑year‑old daughter as the fire intensified.
