Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation reports 528 new cancer cases
The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) reported that its Oncology Clinic recorded 528 new cancer patients between January and August 2026. Of these, 107 cases were identified as breast cancer.
Dr. Latoya Gooding, Head of the GPHC Oncology Department, noted a positive trend in breast cancer care, specifically a decline in patients presenting with late-stage cancer since 2015. This improvement is attributed to increased public awareness and better early detection, which is a critical factor in survival rates.
The GPHC Oncology Clinic provides free cancer treatment to Guyanese citizens and also serves patients traveling from other Caribbean nations. During the first eight months of 2026, the clinic recorded 4,115 follow-up visits, with 321 patients beginning chemotherapy and 214 completing their treatment. Additionally, cancer services are being expanded through an outreach clinic in Region Six (Berbice).
