Georgi Dimitrov Mausoleum demolition began in Sofia

On August 21, 1999, the demolition of the Georgi Dimitrov Mausoleum in Sofia, Bulgaria, began. The operation, overseen by Deputy Prime Minister Evgeni Bakardzhiev and Prime Minister Ivan Kostov, initially involved attempts to destroy the structure using explosives.

Despite an initial blast involving 300 kilograms of explosives, the building did not collapse, merely tilting to one side. Following the unsuccessful detonations, the demolition process continued using mechanical equipment. The final debris from the site was removed by the afternoon of August 27, 1999.

The mausoleum was originally constructed in 1949 to house the embalmed remains of the communist leader Georgi Dimitrov. The remains had been removed and buried in the Central Sofia Cemetery in July 1990. The decision to demolish the structure followed years of political debate after the removal of the remains.
