Georgi Kandev sues businessman Yulian Yankov for defamation

Georgi Kandev, a vice-presidential candidate and former Secretary General of the Ministry of Interior, has filed a private defamation lawsuit against businessman Yulian Yankov, known by the nickname ‘Kartofa’. The case was initiated at the Pernik District Court on July 30.

Kandev alleges that Yankov attributed uncommitted crimes to him. The legal action follows an interview released in early July, in which Yankov claimed he had attempted to bribe Kandev and alleged that Kandev demanded a six-figure sum and a 50% stake in his business.

Previously, in April, Kandev had released a video claiming he was facing pressure and threats from an individual nicknamed ‘Kartofa’. Additionally, an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Fund revealed that Yankov’s company, Unit Assist, provides roadside assistance and has been used by the Ministry of Interior to transport physical evidence, receiving payments despite the absence of formal contracts.
