Georgia 13th District special election advances two Democrats to runoff
Rep. David Scott died on April 22, 2026, triggering a special election for Georgia’s 13th Congressional District to fill the seat for the remainder of the term ending in January 2027. Six candidates – four Democrats (Marcye Scott, Everton Blair, Tony Brown, Carlos Moore) and two Republicans (Caesar Gonzales, Fayth Park) – contested the race on Tuesday, July 28. No candidate achieved a majority; with about 80% of the vote counted, Marcye Scott led with roughly 47% and Everton Blair had about 37%, sending both to a runoff scheduled for Aug. 25.
The district spans six counties—Clayton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Henry, Newton and Rockdale—with Gwinnett County providing roughly 46% of the electorate. Because the seat was previously held by a Democrat in a heavily Democratic district, the outcome could influence the narrow Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.
