SEC sues LSU and Lane Kiffin over recruitment of former professional athletes
The Southeastern Conference (SEC) has filed a federal lawsuit in Alabama against Louisiana State University (LSU), its leadership, and head football coach Lane Kiffin. The conference alleges that LSU has engaged in a “deliberate and coordinated campaign” to recruit professional athletes in violation of league rules that prohibit players who have signed professional contracts from returning to college competition.

During court proceedings, athletes testified to their financial situations; Harris reported receiving only $190 in travel expenses from the New Orleans Saints, while Wright stated he would return a $25,000 signing bonus to play for LSU.
The legal conflict creates significant uncertainty for LSU’s upcoming season. While the state court injunction offers temporary protection, the SEC is pursuing federal action to defend its “Professionalism Rules” and its right to expressive association. Additionally, Clemson University has notified LSU that fielding former professional players may constitute a breach of the contractual obligations between the two schools for their upcoming game.
