Hurricane Isaias strikes Florida and Alabama, leaving four dead FAST-MOVING
Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin, Florida, on Friday night as a Category 2 storm with winds reaching approximately 165 km/h. The hurricane, the first of the 2026 Atlantic season, caused significant damage across the Gulf Coast before weakening into a post-tropical cyclone as it moved over Alabama.
At least four deaths have been linked to the storm. In Florida, one person died when a tree fell on a home, and another died in a garage due to carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator. In Alabama, two additional deaths were reported, including a fatal vehicle crash involving a downed tree.
The storm caused widespread power outages, affecting between 600,000 and 900,000 customers across Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi. In Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 27 counties and activated approximately 5,000 National Guard members to assist with recovery efforts.
In addition to wind damage and downed trees, the hurricane caused significant disruptions to oil and gas production in the Gulf of Mexico. Approximately 63 to 71 percent of production in the region was suspended, removing an estimated 1.3 to 1.5 million barrels per day from the market.
