Georgia arrests man for attempting to sell uranium-238
The State Security Service of Georgia has arrested a Georgian citizen for the alleged illegal handling of uranium-238. Authorities state the suspect intended to sell the radioactive substance to a foreign national for 700,000 USD.
During the operation, conducted by the Counterintelligence and Special Operations Departments, agents intercepted the suspect and discovered two small containers in his vehicle. These containers held a light-colored powder substance, which was verified using a portable radiation detector. The exact quantity and origin of the uranium have not yet been disclosed.
The suspect is being investigated under Article 230 of the Georgian Criminal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. This incident follows several other recent cases of illicit nuclear material trafficking in the region, including the 2025 detention of individuals attempting to purchase uranium and cesium-137.
