57‑year‑old Irvin Lamar Simpson of Gainesville pleaded guilty to three counts of fentanyl trafficking, one count of methamphetamine trafficking, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, obstruction and possession of a drug‑related object. A Gwinnett County judge sentenced him to 45 years in federal prison, with the first 40 years to be served without parole.
The investigation began in January 2023 after Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents received a tip about Simpson’s drug sales. Surveillance captured him entering a vehicle with a backpack; a K‑9 alerted deputies to the presence of narcotics. Officers recovered roughly 35 g of fentanyl, 98 g of methamphetamine, more than 20 g of cocaine, a handgun and digital scales, valued at about $4,000. Simpson fled on foot into a nearby wooded area but was tracked and apprehended by a retired K‑9 named Cino.
Prosecutors highlighted Simpson’s extensive criminal record dating back to the 1980s and noted that he had been released early from a prior federal sentence because officials believed he no longer posed a threat. Six months before the Gwinnett arrest, he was stopped in Habersham County with a distribution quantity of fentanyl.
