Georgia election officials and candidates navigate Trump influence

As Georgia enters the final stretch of the gubernatorial race, Republican nominee Rick Jackson has announced he will skip President Donald Trump’s upcoming rally in Macon. Jackson, a healthcare executive running against Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms, intends to focus his campaigning efforts on suburban Atlanta to boost voter turnout in Cherokee County. The race is currently considered a toss-up by the Cook Political Report, with recent polling showing Jackson slightly ahead of Bottoms within the margin of error.

In northwest Georgia, election officials are addressing renewed claims from President Trump regarding the integrity of past state elections. Whitfield County Election Director Shaynee Bryson defended the security of the voting process, describing Trump’s assertions of rigged elections as “discouraging.”

Election workers in Georgia have also expressed concerns regarding safety following the arrival of suspicious white substances in mail sent to various political and election offices across the country. These tensions follow the significant political friction in the state stemming from the 2020 election challenges.
