Georgia EV manufacturers adapt to shifting federal policies

Georgia's significant investment in electric vehicle (EV) and clean energy manufacturing is facing new challenges due to shifts in federal policy under the Trump administration. For years, the state has utilized tax incentives and workforce training to attract major players, resulting in large-scale projects from companies such as Hyundai, Rivian, Kia, and Blue Bird.

Recent federal changes have destabilized the economic outlook for these manufacturers. The administration has eliminated federal EV tax credits for consumers, eased emissions regulations for internal combustion engines, and imposed tariffs on battery packs and charging hardware. Additionally, the previous federal push to electrify government vehicle fleets has ended.

In response to these changes, manufacturers are adjusting their production strategies. At Kia’s West Point plant, leadership noted a transition toward a “middle-of-the-road opportunity,” placing a greater emphasis on hybrid vehicles as the loss of tax incentives has altered the market environment.
