Georgia greenhouse producers face import competition
Domestic greenhouse growers in Georgia are facing significant price competition from vegetable imports, primarily from Turkey and Iran, despite consistent year-round demand for tomatoes and cucumbers.
In 2025, Georgia imported approximately 27,000 tons of tomatoes valued at roughly USD 19.3 million and nearly 14,800 tons of cucumbers valued at over USD 10 million. Turkey remains the most significant external supplier, accounting for 19,330 tons of tomato imports during the first ten months of 2025.
To combat these challenges and improve efficiency during unfavorable winter months, local producers are investing in automation, advanced lighting, and data-driven cultivation. The Georgian Greenhouse Corporation (GGC), which operates a 12-hectare complex in Gardabani, has focused its efforts on supplying the local market. According to head agronomist Paata Abuladze, competing on price with imports from Turkey and Iran remains a primary obstacle for the domestic industry.
