Georgia gubernatorial debate features empty lectern as Rick Jackson skips event

Democratic candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms appeared alone at an Atlanta Press Club debate on Monday after Republican rival Rick Jackson refused to participate. This marks the first time in 32 years that the club has failed to host a gubernatorial debate featuring both candidates.

Jackson has previously stated his preference for direct voter engagement over this specific debate format. Following the event, Bottoms criticized Jackson, calling him a “coward” and suggesting he is more willing to stand with Donald Trump than to answer unscripted questions from Georgia residents.

The gubernatorial race is currently highly competitive, with recent polling showing both candidates within the margin of error. Bottoms is supported by former presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, while Jackson has the endorsement of Donald Trump. Early voting in Georgia began on October 13, with the general election scheduled for November 3.
