Georgia law enforcement and criminal legal developments

Several legal developments and arrests have occurred in Georgia involving felony charges and immunity rulings.

Former Covington police officer Michael Bernard Dante Canty was arrested by the Georgia State Patrol. Canty faces four felony counts of violation of oath by a public officer and four misdemeanor counts related to the illegal use of law enforcement license plate data. The alleged incidents took place on four separate dates between August 2024 and January 2025.

In Lithonia, Lamar Dionte Jones, 27, was arrested by the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office and U.S. Marshals for aggravated assault. The arrest stems from a July 13 shooting at a barbershop that left one man seriously injured. Authorities recovered three firearms from Jones's vehicle during the arrest.

Additionally, a case against 44-year-old Medicus Brown has been dismissed. Brown, who was charged with aggravated assault with intent to murder and firearm possession following a shooting at the Decatur Library in February, was granted immunity after his attorney argued the act was in self-defense.
