Georgia police officers investigated for misuse of license plate readers

Law enforcement agencies in Georgia are facing scrutiny following investigations into the misuse of Flock Safety license plate reader technology.

In Savannah, the Police Department fired six employees, including four sworn officers and two civilian staff, after an internal audit revealed they used the surveillance system for personal searches involving family and acquaintances. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is also conducting a criminal investigation into the matter. One officer reportedly provided unauthorized access to the system to an individual at another agency.

In Bibb County, three former deputies—Joseph Callaway, Coznavian Stubbs, and Toni Lewis—were arrested and charged with offenses including stalking and violation of oath by a public officer. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office alleges the officers used the automated readers to track individuals with whom they had personal relationships. Sheriff David Davis stated that while the technology is a valuable tool, it must not be used for personal purposes that infringe upon constitutional rights.
