Georgia lawmakers discuss impact of Supreme Court ruling on local fees
Georgia lawmakers are evaluating the potential consequences of a recent state Supreme Court ruling that struck down a firefighting fee in Chatham County. The court ordered the county to refund approximately $30 million in fees and interest following a class-action lawsuit.
Local officials, including the mayor of Perry and the city manager of Decatur, expressed concerns that the decision could undermine the ability of municipalities to generate revenue through various fees, such as those for sanitation, recreation, and stormwater. Without these fees, local governments may have limited options beyond property and sales taxes.
Representatives noted that certain entities, such as state colleges and nonprofits, are exempt from property taxes, making alternative revenue streams like fees essential for funding services like fire protection. The House Blue-Ribbon Study Committee on Local Government Taxation, Funding, and Budgeting is currently reviewing these fiscal challenges.
