Global updates: Medical research concerns, biodiversity summits, and French protests

A correspondence letter published in The Lancet Global Health has raised methodological concerns regarding a systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) prevention during cesarean sections. While the 2025 study suggested that combining oxytocin with tranexamic acid reduces PPH risk by 56% compared to oxytocin alone, critics argue that potential publication bias and incomplete reporting of study selection criteria may have overstated the treatment's efficacy.

In Yerevan, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze participated in the COP17 Leaders Summit on Biodiversity. Kobakhidze emphasized Georgia's commitment to protecting its diverse ecosystems, noting that protected areas in the country now exceed one million hectares, covering more than 15% of its territory. He highlighted the importance of international conventions in preserving natural heritage, such as the Colchic rainforests.

In France, large-scale demonstrations are planned to protest the rising cost of living. Following recent student protests, authorities anticipate up to 200,000 demonstrators nationwide, with approximately 40,000 expected in Paris. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has established a crisis unit to monitor the situation in real-time, amid concerns that the protests could lead to urban violence and influence the upcoming presidential elections.
