Georgia, Portugal, Romania, and Spain form rugby alliance

The rugby federations of Georgia, Portugal, Romania, and Spain have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish the ‘Alliance of the Four Nations’. This strategic alliance brings together high-performance European federations that currently operate outside the Six Nations tournament.

The alliance aims to create a unified front regarding major decisions in the sport, including proposals for competition reform, international calendars, governance, and financial allocations. By coordinating their efforts within Rugby Europe and World Rugby, the member nations seek to increase their global competitiveness and build a more sustainable economic model for rugby in their respective regions.

Key areas of cooperation include high-performance development, coach education, and youth and junior rugby programs. The alliance will also explore new, higher-level competition formats between member nations and identify shared commercial opportunities. The group will be managed by a Coordination Committee with a rotating presidency.
