Georgia residents contest zoning and redevelopment proposals

Residents in two Georgia communities are engaged in disputes regarding land use and preservation. In Atlanta, the City Council Zoning Committee has placed a proposed historic district designation for Peachtree Circle in Ansley Park on hold. Council member Alex Wan moved to shelve the legislation due to local friction, noting that opponents fear the designation could impact property values, taxes, and renovation capabilities. Wan indicated he would reintroduce the measure if proponents achieve a “supermajority of support” from Peachtree Circle residents by September 8.

In Woodstock, residents of the Ansley Park community are protesting a redevelopment proposal they claim could displace more than 130 families. Organizers are calling on the Woodstock City Council to reject the plan and instead rezone the area as a mobile home community to protect it as affordable housing. The developer has requested that the City Council postpone the vote on the redevelopment until November.
