Georgia sets execution date for man convicted of 2003 realtor murders

Georgia prison officials have scheduled the execution of Stacey Humphreys, 53, for September 16 at 7 p.m. via lethal injection. Humphreys is serving a death sentence for the 2003 murders of real estate agents Cyndi Williams, 33, and Lori Brown, 21, in suburban Atlanta.

The murders occurred in Powder Springs when Humphreys allegedly entered their office, robbed them, and forced them to undress before killing them. He reportedly stole more than $3,000 from their accounts to pay off high-interest loans.

This marks the first scheduled execution in Georgia this year, following a period of slowed capital punishment due to litigation regarding a COVID-19 pandemic-era agreement. Humphreys’ previous execution date in December was halted after his legal team raised conflict-of-interest concerns regarding members of the State Board of Pardons and Paroles. While a judge ruled that one board member must recuse herself due to a “material conflict of interest,” other challenges regarding execution protocols and pandemic-related protections have been rejected by the courts.
